During his early career piloting flatboats on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, Lincoln frequently ran aground on sandbars. In 1848, after watching the steamboat Globe strand on a mudflat in Lake Erie, Lincoln conceived a mechanical solution: expandable bellows mounted along the hull that could be inflated using the boat's steam engine to instantly increase displacement and float the ship across shallow waters.
Expandable waterproof bellows made of rubberized canvas are secured along both sides of the hull below the waterline. The Historical Bottleneck
Ohio and Mississippi packets ran onto sandbars as the river fell. The usual fix was to offload cargo onto flats or to 'grasshopper' the hull forward on spars and a capstan. Both cost days. Lincoln had been stranded on the Talisman in 1831 and again as a passenger in 1848; he filed in 1849 as a one-term congressman from Illinois.

Captains already had spars. Rubber bellows in 1849 were heavy, leaky, and untried at steamboat scale.
US 6,281 issued 22 May 1849 with no interference. Lincoln carved the model now in the Smithsonian. No yard built the system. Goodyear rubber of that decade was not yet a marine fabric.
The patent sat. Lincoln went back to Springfield, then to the presidency. He liked to walk visitors through the drawings.
During the Civil War he still mentioned the patent when he wanted to prove he understood mechanical drawings. The Union navy did not resurrect the bellows.
None as hardware. Some as biography: a prairie lawyer who thought in machines and later ran a war that was, among other things, a logistics problem.
He whittled the model himself. The Patent Office required a model in 1849; most inventors hired a model maker. Lincoln did not.
